UNDP Lebanon provide daily meals to Syrian and Lebanese underprivileged students

As a response to the Syrian crisis, the UNDP approach was to strengthen the Lebanese host communities so they can better support the Syrian refugees. One of the UNDP strategy was to reach this goal through the support of local cooperatives. Many projects have been implemented in the host communities’ areas, mainly North, Bekaa and South.

One of UNDP’s projects aimed at establishing and equipping 5 household wives local bread production centers to produce wheat in Ersal through the LEDA cooperative. This resulted in the creation of new job opportunities that successfully supported 240 Syrian students through their allowance in public schools. The project is intended and assured to be sustained for one year duration to reach the highest success possible

Highlights

  • The UNDP approach was to strengthen the Lebanese host communities so they can better support the Syrian refugees.
  • Enhance the relationship between the host communities and the refugees and create new job opportunities and improve living conditions for a large section of the communities.

Through another project, UNDP supported the Sisters of the good shepherd school that has received 200 Syrian refugees. UNDP supported the Jana al Ayady cooperative in Deir El Ahmar, Bekaa, to provide daily meals to Syrian and Lebanese underprivileged students.

Another concrete example of UNDP’s support to women cooperatives in Bekaa is the case of Nejmet El Soboh Cooperative (Morning Star) located in Mhaydthek. Nejmet El Soboh is a female-owned-and-operated cooperative that processes and packages traditional food products such as jams, syrups, dried fruits and other quality produce. UNDP procured a van and the much needed steam boiler for the cooperative in order for them to be able to increase their production and keep the pace with the growing demand while maintaining their good quality as well as facilitating the distribution of the products to all Lebanese markets. It recently became ISO certified thanks to the guidance and support of UNDP. Given the quality of their products and the ways in which they have marketed themselves, their customer base is growing fast.
