The increasing influx of refugees from Syria to Lebanon is placing an enormous pressure on the country and its people, especially those in the poorest areas, where refugee concentrations have been the greatest. International recognition to the urgent need to scale up the support to the Lebanese host communities as part of the response to the Syrian crisis has reached higher levels.

The UNDP “Peace Building in Lebanon” project organized a discussion session around the fifth issue of the Peace Building joint news supplement on Thursday 9th of October 2014 in AltCity café in Hamra. Funded by Japan, the fifth issue of the supplement was published on the 29th of September with Annahar and As-Safir newspapers and advertised on the National News Agency’s website. The English translated version was published with the Daily Star newspaper.

Palestinian Gatherings Roundtable Discussions: A first step towards a coordinated resilience –based response
Building on the findings of the UNDP / UN-Habitat report “Profiling Deprivation: An Analysis of the Rapid Needs Assessment in Palestinian Gatherings Host Communities in Lebanon” launched last August, UNDP organized sectoral roundtable discussions for organizations active in Palestinian Gatherings in the Commodore Hotel in Beirut.

Lebanon launches its MDGs Report 2013-2014: Slow progress on the poverty reduction and environmental sustainability goals
A year before 2015, Lebanon’s progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been challenged by a complicated political situation and spillovers of the Syrian crisis, especially the massive influx of refugees, says the latest Lebanon MDG report The number of Syrian refugees entering Lebanon is compromising achievements made on the health MDGs directly, and other MDGs indirectly.

Municipal council members, local NGOs representatives, representatives of municipal police departments, social workers, Heads and members of Social Development Centers from Al Chiyah, Harek Hreik, Furn El Chebbak, Al Ghbayri, Burj El Barajneh and Al Mrayjeh have participated together in the first cycle of a training organized by the UNDP “Peace Building in Lebanon” project on crisis management and mediation.

As part of the WASH awareness campaign launched last March in Palestinian Gatherings, we organized an open day last Thursday in Shabriha, Tyre, in partnership with our local partner NABAA. During the open day, children and their families visited six corners that tackled different WASH themes, including water conservation, personal hygiene, household and environmental hygiene, head lice and Scabies, food safety, and home accidents.

World Humanitarian Day marks the anniversary of the UN Headquarters bombing in Baghdad in 2003 when 22 people, including UN humanitarian veteran Sergio Vieria de Mello, lost their lives. It is a tribute to aid workers worldwide, a commemoration to those who have lost their lives and a celebration of the spirit of humanitarian work around the world.

In an effort to shed light on Palestinian Gatherings in Lebanon, UNDP and UN-Habitat launched last Tuesday their report “Profiling Deprivation: An Analysis of the Rapids Needs Assessment in Palestinian Gatherings Host Communities”.
