Recently, the activities to conduct the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Renewable Energy Sector was launched as part of the larger activities undertaken by the “Mainstreaming Climate Change into Lebanon’s Development Agenda” project; the project is funded by the Lebanon Recovery Fund and is implemented by the Ministry of Environment.

Lebanon Mine Action Center in collaboration with the European Union and the United Nations Development Program held a meeting today concerning “the international support group for Lebanon”. Ambassadors and representatives from donors’ countries attended the meeting as well as national authorities, non- governmental organizations and National Mine Risk Education Steering Committee working on combatting land mines and cluster munitions and other forms of UXO in order to help the mine victim survivors.

Municipality of Saida receives waste dumpsters in support to the communities hosting Syrian refugees
The municipality of received 50 waste dumpsters as a symbolic contribution by the United Nations Development Programme and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on September 11 in the framework of supporting municipalities and cities hosting increasing numbers of displaced Syrian refugees.

The United Nations Development Programme “Recovery of NBC surrounding communities affected by the 2006 and 2007 conflicts” project organized a closing ceremony for “Supply and Installation of 102 Greenhouses in North Lebanon” activity. The ceremony took place on Wednesday September 4th at the municipality of Halba at 10 a.m.

Lebanon remains littered with hundreds of thousands of unexploded ordinance, including cluster munitions. These items continue to kill and maim people in Lebanon and hinder development and reconstruction efforts. In 2006 alone, 215 cluster sub-munitions casualties were registered, the majority of victims are under the age of 18 and approximately 36 percent of the land used for livelihood activities was contaminated.

US$ 1.7 Billion Appeal to Assist Spiraling Number of Refugees from Syria and Affected People in Lebanon
The Government of Lebanon (GoL), the United Nations and its humanitarian partners issued a fifth revised appeal for Lebanon today for over US$ 1.7 billion, including US$ 450 million presented by the GoL for direct support to national institutions and essential public services. The “Regional Response Plan (RRP) for Syrian Refugees” engaging over 60 humanitarian organizations, led by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), extends requirements to cover the period January to December 2013.

The national workshop on “Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action Design and Preparation Consultation on Selecting Priority NAMAs for Lebanon” was held on May 22, 2013 in Beirut, Lebanon, by the Lebanese Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the Low-Emission Capacity Building Project, supported by the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV and KPMG. The workshop presentations entailed a step-by-step NAMA tool, the UNFCCC Registry and a Case study on NAMA development.

Under the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership between UNDP and the Province of Viterbo for the implementation of the project "Local Agenda 21 in Territorial Planning in Energy and Waste Management", a delegation from the Union of Municipalities of Jabal Amel – South Lebanon and UNDP staff, attended training in Mallorca – Spain from 2-11 April 2013. The involved municipalities were Khabrikha, Qantara, Rub Tlatin, Taibe and Meis El Jabal.
