Celebration of World Environment Day 2013
The international observance of World Environment Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action.
This year an event targeting primary school children was held on the 5th of June in Tyre Second Intermediate School.
The event promoted environmental awareness in children to help foster a sense of responsibility and ‘proactive citizenship’ that will enable them to take positive choices and practical steps that will help the environment instead of harming it.
The event was organised and implemented by UNIFIL Civil Affairs, in cooperation with the UNDP Lebanese Center for Water Management and Conservation (LCWMC) at the Ministry of Energy and Water and the UNIFIL Battalions (S5 of ITALBATT). More than 300 students from Tyre Second Intermediate School came together with CA, ITALBATT CIMIC personnel to plant a tree, perform a short play/skit, sing songs, and recite poems about the environment. Small gift hampers comprising of water awareness booklet, water conservation story, and Snakes and Ladders water conservation game were provided to the children by the LCWMC.
At the end of the event a “Water Saver” Certificate from LCWMC was distributed to the students to reflect their enhanced knowledge and commitment to saving water.
