UNDP honors dedicated efforts of local leaders in Palestinian Gatherings
Under the patronage of the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee, UNDP and UN-HABITAT organized a ceremony in honor of 38 municipalities and popular committees at the Grand Serail of Beirut on February 25, 2014. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of the project “Improving the Living Conditions in Palestinian Gatherings” during 2013 and honored the dedication and cooperation of local leaders who made these achievements possible.
In the presence of Deputies Head of Mission at the German and Swiss embassies and other diplomatic communities in Lebanon, heads of municipalities and representatives of popular committees received their certificates from LPDC President Dr. Khaldoun Al Cherif and UNDP Country Director in Lebanon Mr. Luca Renda. “We are seeking to bridge gaps in shelter and basic urban services in Palestinian Gatherings host communities since 2012,” says Renda who highlighted UNDP’s commitment to long-term development goals when providing immediate emergency relief.
The ceremony included a presentation about the living conditions in Palestinian Gatherings and the project’s 2013 achievements, funded by the Government of Germany and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. These achievements include but are not limited to the implementation of 54 urgent infrastructure projects and the rehabilitation and equipment of 317 shelters hosting Palestinian refugees from Syria in Palestinian Gatherings across Lebanon.
