5th awards ceremony for institution reporting their greenhouse gas emissions

March 7, 2019

Minister of Environment awards Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reporting Certificates to the private, commercial and industrial firms who have successfully reported their yearly GHG emissions as per the Minister of environment’s decision 99/1. This initiative was launched under the UNDP Low Emission Capacity Building project in 2013.

“We have always had a strong partnership with the Lebanese Ministry of Environment. Today, we are proud to have the private sector partner up with us."  Said UNDP Resident Representative a.i. Celine Moyroud in her opening speech. “Through our strong team effort and with the fresh promising start with H.E. Mr. Fady Jreissati, I am confident that we are on the right track to combating climate change while protecting and improving Lebanon’s precious natural environment.” Continued Moyroud.

Minister Jreissati expressed his happiness with the participation of private, commercial and industrial firms in reporting information related to their yearly Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and stressed on the importance of UNDP’s role in supporting environmental projects in Lebanon.  Jreissati also stressed on the importance of private-public cooperation and awareness in the environmental field

The decision 99/1 creates a win - win situation for all whereby companies are incentivized to report information related to their greenhouse gas emissions in a transparent, disaggregated, documented and accredited manner. This approach enables companies to self-audit and self-benchmark their carbon footprint.

At the same time, the Ministry benefits from the reported information by guaranteeing a sustained flow of information on the different types and sizes of companies. This information is used for studies and analysis, and forms the basis for sound policy planning. This ministerial decision is part of the Low Emission Capacity Building project (LECB) work that establishes institutional arrangements enabling the creation of a national greenhouse gas inventory system.
