UN Staff in Lebanon Donate for Needy Families

29 Oct 2013

On the occasion of the United Nations Day, annually celebrated on 24 October,  the United Nations Communication Group in Lebanon (UNCG) launched a UN staff donations for families in need in different areas of Lebanon.

The two-week campaign from 3 to 18 October collected in-kind donations that include food and non food items. Funds raised from staff with several United Nations agencies and offices operating in Lebanon were used to provide 924 food packages, which include rice, sugar, pasta, oil, lentils, pasta vermicelli and tea. Non-food items - mostly winter clothes for men, women and children, books, toys and household items - were provided in 113 large boxes.

Teams of UN staff were organizing field visits to several areas between 28 and 31 October to deliver and distribute the food and other donations to poor families across Lebanon.

For efficient distribution, organizers of the UN fundraiser were collaborating with such non-governmental organizations as the Popular Aid for Relief and Development (PARD) to deliver to Palestinian families displaced from Syria and settled in Sekkeh area nearby Ein El Helweh. They were also working with the Amel Association to hand out donations in Beirut’s Southern Suburb, Mount Lebanon, Bekaa, West Bekaa and South Lebanon. Women Charity League in Halba was another NGO teaming up with the UN to distribute the donations to needy people in North Lebanon.
