Members of the Press,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to join you today in opening another new chapter of the growing Live Lebanon story. After last year’s successful launch of the strategic partnership between UNDP and Bank of Beirut and Arab Countries (BBAC) and the welcoming of H.E. Mr. Assi El Hellani as Live Lebanon Goodwill Ambassador, we are here today to announce Al Jadeed TV as the official media partner for Live Lebanon.  This partnership was facilitated through the personal engagement of Live Lebanon Goodwill Ambassador H.E. Mr. Ghaleb Farha, with support from the United Nations Information Center in helping elaborate an impressive work plan.

The Live Lebanon initiative is a truly unique approach to enhancing the livelihoods of different communities across Lebanon.  Each project delivered through Live Lebanon is an embodiment of both the aspirations of the many communities that have taken action to make their lives better and the caring support of Lebanese individuals, especially expatriates, and the Private Sector, who wish to help make those hopes become reality. Now entering its third year, Live Lebanon continues to add to the body of success stories from across the country, having already touched the lives of over 100,000 beneficiaries: from the children of Ayn Yacoob now able to enjoy a safe, new playground and the community in Aramta with access to clean water from sources once polluted and wasted, to the women’s cooperative in Mhedidthe (Ma-haid-se), now able to access new markets overseas for its handmade food products, to name just a few.

The Lebanese media can play an especially critical role in helping achieve these goals in several ways. First, and perhaps most obvious, the media create awareness and disseminate powerful information about the existence and scope of intense disparity facing Lebanese communities in a country with so much wealth. Secondly, the media alone have the means to inspire, to literally shape the way people think and act, to shift public attitudes in simple, yet profound ways by bringing human stories to people and making emotional connections across social and physical divides.

For these reasons, we are proud to join forces with Al Jadeed TV, which has established itself not only as Lebanon’s leading television channel, but also one of the most well known in the Arab world, and among the Arab diaspora. Through Al Jadeed, the Live Lebanon message will literally reach millions of homes across the region and around the world, a contribution that cannot be overestimated.

Let me close by extending our sincere thanks to Mr. Tahseen Khayat and welcoming Al Jadeed to the Live Lebanon family. We are confident that this partnership will take our efforts to a new level, building more awareness about the plight of the most underprivileged communities in Lebanon and inspiring individuals and the private sector to act responsibly together for a greener, healthier, youthful and more prosperous Lebanon for all.

Thank you.
