Achieving equality between men and women relative to the workplace, and sports beautifully intertwined on May 16th, 2018. After a thrilling league, this day proved to be the day where the UNDP/UN Volunteers women’s team won the gold in the basketball BanCo Games, proving yet again that women have a place with men in all spheres of life.
In Lebanon the status quo between men and women seems equal at a glance, however, as you delve into society and observe the adopted by the different genders, a gap between the two is apparent. A way of defeating the stereo-type for both women at work and the perception women have of themselves was achieved through hosting a women’s basketball league. Designed to break any stigma that may exist about girls and sports. As - Tala Moukadem says, “There is a stereotype that sports are for men. So, we are here today to challenge that stereotype that women can compete and they can play”. This shows that the old mentality is still existent and a huge role in Lebanese society.
Tournaments like the one held, challenge the status quo while empowering women both physically and mentally to progress not only in sports but in how she views herself within her working organization as well.
The United Nations and UNDP believe in achieving equality between men and women by eliminating discrimination and violence against women and girls, empowerment of women to rise to their potential, and achievement of equality between women and men in all spheres of life # SDG5.
Lebanon is committed to the 2030 Agenda and to leaving no one behind.
