In framework of the bilateral cooperation between European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) and Lebanon, UNDP Project Manager of the “Institutional Capacity Development of the Railway and Public Transportation Authority (RPTA)” Eng. Charbel Challita participated to EUMEDRAIL national action plan conference held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from the 23rd to 25th of April 2018.
This event gathered all EUMEDRAIL focal points and delegates, public officials from Ministries of Transport, experts of the European Union including the EU Agency for Railways, and International Financial Institutions (IFI) aiming to discuss the National Railway Action Plans of the Southern Neighbourhood countries, their future railway projects and upcoming co-operation activities.
During the conference, UNDP has played an essential role to carry the EUMEDRAIL support for the revitalization mainly the coastal railway corridor by presenting long-standing proposals to rehabilitate the out-of-use railway. An issue discussed largely during the EUROMED Transport Rail meeting held in Beirut on March 22, 2018.
The presentation included the current situation of the railway system, the proposed railway infrastructure projects, and the priorities of the government in development of railway services starting by the coastal line.
Several financial institutions (IFI) as the World Bank, European Investment Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development presented instruments that could support the implementation of these projects.
The European Commission expressed its interest to revive the Lebanese Railway by launching the second phase of the feasibility study for the reconstruction of Beirut Tripoli railway section through the European Investment Bank (EIB).
