We need to invest more in the nursing workforce. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic echoes this call. Today, nurses among other medical professionals are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19. Months before the new coronavirus was first identified in December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife: “The world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030”. While there is an increased demand for nurses, fewer people are choosing nursing as a profession.
